WHY IT'S MORE THAN MILK
MORE THAN MILK creator and host Chloe Brown is not just a dairy farmer, but a passionate advocate for the Australian Dairy Industry.
Alongside husband Rodney, and daughters Charlotte & Eleanor, they currently farm in South West Victoria, where they milk 200 Jersey's. Although Rodney grew up with dairy farming in his blood, farming was NEVER something Chloe had on her radar.
Although she was determined to find a 'career' off farm, it wasn't until the death of their first-born daughter Ashleigh in 2013, that Chloe found her love for dairy farming. The farm gave them a place to grieve, time to spend together, and gave them a constant when the world could have easily crumbled around them.
But quickly the passion for dairy grew!
Working alongside Rodney, she was constantly questioning 'but why do you do it like that?' often using the phrase 'have you considered...' and beginning sentences with 'I was reading that..' or 'I was talking to...'
Coming with no pre-conceived ideas about how or what dairy farming should entail, Chloe searched for the right way to farm... often comparing herself to 'good farmers' across the industry who always seemed to have all the answers. But what she found wasn't the RIGHT way, just an incredible amount of DIFFERENT ways to farm.
Although commonly across the industry she met many women who were undervaluing themselves. Introducing themselves as doing just the books, or just doing the calves or just the milking… as if these roles standalone didn’t make them the farmer. And so in late 2021, Chloe alongside Renata Cumming and Lucy Collins, created Cream of the Crop, a 2-day dairy conference, allowing a safe space for women regardless of their perceived importance or role within the farming business, to come together with the opportunity to learn, to be challenged and to collectively stand together in the hope for a more diverse, educated and encouraged generation of dairy farming women.
After an incredibly successful first year, they sat down to plan the next event, compiling a list of local women who potentially could sit on a panel to share their story and experiences. The panel could fit 3 women, the list included over 50 names... no-one better or worse than the other, just simply different!
It became increasingly obvious to Chloe, that someone needed to share these stories, to celebrate the incredible individuals, to help build a sense of community and to promote dairy. And so MORE THAN MILK was created.
Launching in January 2023, the weekly podcast aims to showcase the diversity in the industry, exploring the HOW and WHY each guest is connected to dairy. From farmers to industry professionals, being involved in dairy doesn’t limit you to just putting cups on and we all have a valuable role to play.
If we don't promote the dairy industry, then who will???
